Warfarin (Coumadin)

Warfarin, which also goes under the brand name Coumadin, is an anticoagulant medication. It is given to patients to prevent blood clots from forming.

Warfarin and Vitamin K

Foods with high levels of Vitamin K can affect the way warfarin works. It is important to eat the same amount of food with Vitamin K in it each week; if you decrease or increase the amount, it can cause problems with your warfarin dosage. Foods high in Vitamin K include:

  1. Spinach
  2. Kale
  3. Collard greens
  4. Mustard greens
  5. Turnip greens
  6. Endive
  7. Lettuce
  8. Broccoli
  9. Brussels sprouts
  10. Cabbage
  11. Asparagus
  12. Peas
  13. Okra

Warfarin Tips

  1. Take it at the same time every day
  2. Don't double-dose if you miss a pill
  3. Check with your doctor before changing brands
  4. Avoid alcoholic beverages
  5. Tell your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter drugs that you take
  6. Tell all other doctors and dentists you are taking warfarin
  7. Contact your doctor if you have excessive bleeding or bruising
